Reasons you should read this book:

Kyoshi and Rangi. Kyoshi and Rangi. Genuinely ane of my favorite fictional relationships of the year, probably. This is a f/f romance (bisexuals won with Kyoshi!), and I truly cannot believe a cis human being wrote it because it is admittedly succulent. Let me merely requite you a few quotes:

✦ "You don't think you deserve peace and happiness and good things, but you do!" Rangi yelled. "You, Kyoshi! Non the Avatar, but you!"
✦ "Where you become, I go."
✦ Kyoshi realized that comforting her throughout the nighttime was both an honor and a torture she wouldn't have traded for anything in the world.
✦ With their eyes on each other, information technology was easy to be brave. Perchance that'south the but way we get through this, Kyoshi thought. Merely never await abroad.

And I'm just going to link you to this very disarming tweet I fabricated, also equally more than quotes. Read information technology for them, if not for anything else!!

Kyoshi is probably my second favorite part of the volume. She'southward just such an astonishing character, and her development throughout the book was truly incredible; you can actually come across where her want for justice was born. Kyoshi was a girl who was never viewed with any kind of respect or importance her unabridged life, aside from three people. Her being identified as the Avatar tardily and coming from an abased, impoverished background meant that she always had to fight for everything in her life, fifty-fifty bones things she should have been entitled to. Seeing her grow into her Avatar identity and become the fierce, powerful Kyoshi nosotros know was absolutely delightful. I'm just going to drop more quotes because I beloved her then much:

✦ To Kyoshi that had been the easiest lesson to take in. She was nothing special. She had never been anything special. That was a mantra she believed in.
This is what I need to go along safe above all else. The sudden clarity of her realization caused her mirth to evaporate. [...] Her fist tightened around nothing. And the spirits help anyone who would take this from me.
They're humans like us, made of skin and guts and hurting. They need to be reminded of that fact.

Likewise, the book is a fantastic exploration of ethics, justice, and corruption in general, I recollect, as well every bit destiny and responsibility (especially as an Avatar). One of the decisions Kyoshi makes involves choosing between staying with someone who has done several bad things, especially to her own loved ones, but has besides been beneficial to the stability of the World Kingdom—or becoming a part of the daofei, who are lawless criminals, in social club to seek and proceeds revenge. At that place is as well the idea that Kyoshi must set an case and maintain a reputation equally an Avatar, so it raises the questions: Who does Kyoshi desire to be? What will she be known for? What is she willing to fight for?

And finally, if yous're a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I highly recommend reading this! It introduces and/or expands on the community, civilisation, and politics in the ATLA universe, and information technology was really interesting to see what all the nations were like before the ATLA timeline. Information technology was actually a bit disconcerting to be in a earth where Air Nomads were yet alive and the Fire Nation wasn't overtly imperialist like it is in ATLA, but I loved merely being immersed in the ATLA world once again. And sky bison!! I love them!!!

If I had i gripe, it was that the decision of the book's plot arc felt a scrap anticlimactic, and there were so many things happening at the end that felt like they came out of nowhere without much buildup, just regardless of these pocket-sized complaints, I definitely am in honey with this book and cannot wait for the sequel. Kyoshi has at present become ane of my favorite characters (and her romance ane of my favorites equally well), and I volition live my life the manner she told me to... be gay practice law-breaking!!

Avatar: The Final Airbender is my favourite show of all fourth dimension, and so reading a cannon story most our bisexual queen, avatar kyoshi???? YES PLZ. And this was and so good!!! A couple of things that happened really tore out my soul. Like... I was and then upset for these characters oh my word, and information technology takes a lot for a book to achieve me emotionally like that, so props to F.C Yee! I loved seeing all the footling nods to the original series, from mentioning places that nosotros've already been like Ember Island, Ba Sing Se and Omashu, to a cameo from turtleducks, it made my avatar-loving centre soar! Likewise, the f/f romance????? *chef'due south kiss*

I also loved the feminist vibes and how Kyoshi wasn't afraid to phone call men out on their BS.

"At that place were always a certain kind of homo who thought her item dimensions made her a public expert, an oddity they were free to gawk at, prod, or worse. Often they causeless she should be grateful for the attention. That they were special and powerful for giving it to her."

Still, I did experience like the story dragged a trivial bit at times, and I wasn't a huge fan of the over-arcing plot (but that's only a personal affair), but I all the same can't wait to read the side by side book and run across where this goes!

This was like an Avatar: The Last Airbender episode...simply as a book.

A lot of times I feel books based on franchises are a bit mediocre. I tend to not gravitate towards them because they add so little. This is non the case for The Ascension of Kyoshi. This was like an Avatar: The Last Airbender episode...but equally a book.

A lot of times I feel books based on franchises are a bit mediocre. I tend to not gravitate towards them considering they add and then picayune. This is not the case for The Rising of Kyoshi. A volume that fits seamlessly in with the show. It is clear F.C. Yee has a deep understanding and respect for the lore and show.

The world building is expanded in ways that make perfect logical sense. We see what the world was similar earlier the Hundred Year War. Back when Air Nomads existed and the Burn Nation wasn't colonizing. How the nations lived in relative harmony. But don't worry about the harmony making it boring, there's enough of action, disharmonize, and political intrigue.

More important than the world expansion though is Kyoshi'due south character expansion. Yee takes a character we saw a handful of times briefly, and makes her fleshed out and real. She's non the bloodthirsty Avatar we run into memed about, but rather a young Avatar who's been dealt bad luck, who has to fight for her power and respect. She'due south surprisingly empathetic, but fast to make decisions and stick by them as an Earthbender should.

She's also quite romantic and has a sweetness romance with another female person bough. You like The Legend of Korra's ending? Well then you're going to be like that foaming oral cavity guy from the episode The Warriors of Kyoshi for this.

With the character report and earth building there is too a ton of engaging action, as expected from Avatar. The Avatar-esque fights translate surprisingly well to a written medium.

My only real nitpick is that information technology takes quite awhile for the actual plot to outset. Don't go me wrong the book is entertaining from commencement to stop, simply I didn't experience similar the real book started until like 35% of the manner through.

Nitpicking aside, this is an excellent addition to the Avatar universe I'd highly recommend to any fan of the show. Wouldn't recommend it for someone who hasn't watched the bear witness because you lot're thrown in without much explanation for anything. This was written for fans past a fan.

(Btw I'd also recommend Yee'southward The Epic Crush of Genie Lo duology it'southward superb)

In truth, this should have been a lengthy graphic novel. Not similar the other comics, but a full length graphic novel, since there was a decent corporeality of information and development in this book. I just feel like the world of the Avatar wasn't depicted well through writing, and the visuals are function of what makes that universe so damn special.

I ended upwards skimming a lot of this book. The plot was slow to develop, and the pacing was pretty staggered at times. But overall, I just don't really accept anything proficient to say about this book, bated from the fact that the author is a practiced writer. I only don't recall his writing fits this story.

If you are a massive fan of both the cartoon and Kyoshi (of which I am but a fan of 1, and information technology is non the main grapheme of this book lol) so I would highly propose giving this volume a try. Information technology merely wasn't for me, and while I'yard disappointed, I'yard also okay with information technology. I never liked Kyoshi when she showed upwards in the prove, so I'm not too heartbroken over this revelation. However, you can bet that I won't be investing any money in the sequel.

From what we've seen of Kysohi on the Avatar the terminal Airbender show we accept a very little information about the Earthbending Avatar who ended upwards creating the Dai Lai and who lived to be a 230 years onetime! The oldest Avatar to have ever lived. I accept often asked myself how it was possible that Kyoshi accomplished the things that she did, and what made her into what she was?

We are finally getting the answers now. xi years subsequently Avatar the concluding Airbender has ended we are getting introduced to Kyoshi her whole story and it sure is something.

"What insult have I given you?"
"Your existence," Kyoshi spat.

Italian Trulli

Kyoshi's life is anything just a picnic on the beach. Information technology wasn't that she was given anything on a silvery platter or something. She was left at a very young age by her parents and had to survive on her own for some fourth dimension until Kelsang came into her life and provided for her.

Kyoshi knew what information technology was like to founder alone in the dark, grasping for edges that were too far away, without a mother or father to extend a hand and pull you to safety. The pain of having no value to anyone, nothing to merchandise for food or warmth or a loving encompass.

⛰️ Kyoshi: A bisexual Earthbender. Even as an Earthbender she isn't particularly skilled, and she is unaware of her truthful powers. Is incredibly alpine and was an orphan in her younger years.

⛰️ Kelsang: An Airbender. Owns a bison called Pengpeng. Raised Kyoshi as his own.

He'd done all this, saved the life of a child stranger, for no reason other than that she needed someone. In a role of the Earth Kingdom where honey was reserved solely for blood relations, the monk from a foreign land was the dearest person in the world to Kyoshi.

⛰️ Rangi: She's one badass Firebender. Is a personal guard to the Avatar. Is in honey with Kysohi.

I just want to scream (view spoiler)[

"Come on," she said. "Cheer upwards. I didn't mean to send you into a spiral."

"I can't cheer upwards. I'k in Horse Stance."

"I similar your focus," Ragni said. "Only if you can withstand this." She slid betwixt Kysohi's arms and gave her a head-tilting, knee-buckling kiss, as powerful and deep as the bounding main after a storm.

(hide spoiler)]

In one case Kysohi finds out the truth about her beingness the Avatar she is forced to flee from the mansion that she had been working at with Rangi when someone wants to use her powers for ill intends. Forced to hide her powers Kyoshi ends upwardly with a ring of renegades where she participates in a couple of schemes and takes her first practices in the other elements, and particularly struggles with Airbending.

Still Kyoshi is far from beingness a fully established Avatar, and is still in hiding. Her angle doesn't come naturally to her, and she does whatsoever is in her powers to train her bending.

Italian Trulli

Kyoshi's story has never been an easy ane and she had to fight to go any she was entitled to. This book only followed Kyoshi during her younger years and nosotros watched her existence shaped into an Avatar into the race for something humongous.

While I was reading this book I had kind of forgotten that this was going to exist a two part series and when I read To be connected on the concluding pages I wanted to hurl my ereader across the room, but decided not to. Sure Kyoshi was merely in her teens in this outset book so information technology'southward only logical that nosotros get then read about the rest of her life whenever the side by side volume comes out. When…

I have enclosed Kyoshi inside my middle and she volition remain there until I draw my final breath.

The Rising of Kyoshi is the first in a duology following the history backside Avatar Kyoshi and I found the story somewhat convoluted.

THE Fine art THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN

Permit me preface my review by saying that the biggest problem this story faced was that it was told through the wrong medium.

I am a HUGE Avatar: The Last Airbender fan. I watch information technology every year, and I have watched information technology every year (sometimes several times a year) for almost two decades. It is one of my favourite animated serial of all time, and as far as I'm concerned, it'south faultless.

What made Avatar: The Final Airbender so neat were the character arcs, the animation style and the discussion of morality that was woven seamlessly through nigh every episode. This made the show feel sincere and unique. And although I have gotten that same feeling from the comics that accept been published afterwards the show concluded, I just didn't get that feeling from this book.

For starters, this story could accept been and so much more had it been a graphic novel. Some stories should not be in a graphic novel format (eg:- White Sand past Brandon Sanderson), and some stories tin can only flourish through a graphic novel format. The Ascent of Kyoshi falls in the latter. Even though a mini blithe series could take washed wonders, a graphic novel format would have fit this story perfectly. The story was meant to be told visually.

THE RISE OF AN AVATAR

I liked the story. The concept was a fun and interesting one with twists and turns to keep me interested. I enjoyed the take a chance, and I actually enjoyed the bending. My favourite attribute has to be getting answers as to why Kyoshi wore the armour that she wore. The history behind her heritage was fascinating, and I want to know more.

All the same, I did not care about Kyoshi. I did not care about her all-time friend or even her bending masters. All the characters, including the protagonist, were then very bland. You lot could interchange every grapheme with any other character from a typical YA book and at that place would be no change. At that place was no characteristic that fabricated any character stand out, they were pretty i dimensional, and Kyoshi'due south lack of duty bothered me. As an Earthbender, she lacked quite a few Earthbending traits, peculiarly the power to be sure of herself. Personally, I believe that was a error in characterisation. Even though she was a teenager, she was an Earthbender, and Earthbenders are firm. Kyoshi was as well flaky, and her personality was besides like to that of an Airbender.

LONG Agone THE 4 NATIONS LIVED IN HARMONY…

There was no earth building in this volume. It'south understandable, because the people who would read this book are already fans of this world. The earth has already been congenital. Nevertheless, that worked to the detriment of this story. Instead of creating a rich world as a backdrop, we had by and large dialogue and shallow internal monologues. In that location was zip profound nigh Avatar Kyoshi's journey, with discussions of practiced and evil taking place. In that location was nix to truly place this story in the Avatar World.

Regardless of my criticisms, I will be reading the second book with the hope that the problems I mentioned will be solved.

With 442 pages, The Rise of Kyoshi tells the story of (you guessed it) Kyoshi, a simple servant girl from a minor town called Yokoya, located somewhere deep in the Globe kingdom, on her journey to observe and then bear witness the legitimacy of her avatarhood. While she goes off on multiple adventures, she meets new friends, finds honey (can I just say how friends-to-lovers is my absolute favorite trope Always??), learns to accept her destiny, all the while trying to notice and uphold justice.
The unabridged thing just felt SO nostalgic, AND Withal information technology was pretty obvious that this time the writing manner and the content were aimed at a more mature audience, different the Y7 rating of the comics and the shows.
Equally such, this volume managed to appeal to BOTH the inner child in me (obsessing over ATLA and LOK since the year 2005) AND my current self (only my inner child wearing the skin of a grown-donkey woman).
IT WAS EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE AND And so MORE!!!
I would definitely recommend this volume to every living (and non-living) human being currently inhabiting planet Earth (and THEN spread the give-and-take beyond to other planets besides), and defend its laurels with my life (not exaggerating at all.)

Do I think you should read this is you've never seen Avatar? Probably not. Information technology's never clearly explained what the Avatar actually is and I don't know if the dynamics between the 4 nations and the politics of the Earth Kingdom would make every bit much sense.

But if y'all're an Avatar fan? This should be right upwards your alley! The book definitely has he ATLA vibe while being a bit darker to entreatment to a YA audience (in the same vein every bit Legend of Korra).

I really enjoyed the plot. Information technology was easy to follow and provided opportunities for some fun travelling on bison dorsum (yes, hello, nostalgia is calling). I think it keeps the subtlety of ATLA in terms of levels of villainy/the different nations while introducing us to some pirates and brigands. I beloved that this time effectually it'southward not and then clear cut who the Avatar actually is and it'south not piece of cake for Kyoshi to accept and grow into her office.

I really loved the antagonist and the disharmonize at the center of this book simply I have to say that the main confrontation we look forrard to was a bit underwhelming. We exercise get some very intriguing revelations at the end of the book though.

"But now she understood. True hatred was knife-edged and certain. A scale that begged for perfect residue. Her only responsibility in this life, as far every bit she was concerned, was to even the weight."

I love Kyoshi with my whole heart and she might be my favourite Avatar? She is used to downsize herself, attempt to blend in, be normal, be anything but special. She hasn't had the easiest life, having to grow upwards on her own, abandoned by her parents, ignored but the townsfolk and bullied by their children. She despises her birth parents and is travelling the world with murder on her mind. She is an angry and vengeful Avatar and it makes so much sense as to how she concluded up beingness the utilitarian icon we know from the show. I dear and will protect my favourite tall lady with my life.

It's always interesting to see which element the Avatar struggles with the most and even more so when information technology turned out Kyoshi struggles to control her own element. She is an extremely powerful bender but it's hard for her to focus her ability on a minor calibration. Moving the whole seafloor? Yeah, sure. Moving a pebble? Eh, not so much.

We besides become to know why she has fans and where the makeup comes from! And it makes so much sense! I recollect F.C. Yee did a corking job at taking all the primal elements nosotros know near Kyoshi and brand them meaningful and requite you that "duh, it couldn't be any other mode" feeling.

I also loved loved loved the unlike relationship dynamics she had in this book. While she resents her biological parents, she has found a begetter in Kelsang, an air nomad and previous companion of the Avatar. I loved him so much and their relationship was and so precious.

"How-do-you-do, I'm the Avatar and I'one thousand a chip in love with my best friends." - Kyoshi, at some indicate probably. Nosotros dear a bi/pan icon.

"Kyoshi tried one last time to growl in threat. Instead, the name came out like a dedication of thanks to the spirits for this fiery blessing of a girl."

Rangi & Kyoshi make my heart so soft, I ship information technology and I love it. They had astonishing interactions and y'all can run into how much they care nearly each other. Nosotros don't really see a build-up because they've been friends for a long time so the feelings accept been at that place for a long while.

"Where y'all go I go."

Rangi is fiercely loyal and they have the all-time dynamic of "nosotros're both idiots who blitz into danger, we hate that just we still back up each other". I know that the next volume is probably gonna give major angst and I can't wait to endure. Aha.

(as well at that place was this ane moment where they were training together and?? my heart gave a little bound. I dear them so much.)

My main gripe (well, gripe is a strong wrong) with the volume was the side characters. Kyoshi joins a group of four people and I just feel like ii of them stand up out to me. Lek was such an interesting character to me due to his feelings towards Kyoshi'due south parents and the resentment she has towards them. That led them to take a very interesting dynamic. And then Lao Ge was probably one of the most intriguing characters of the Avatar universe. I can't wait to come across more of him and glean more data well-nigh him. I liked Kirima just she was definitely stronger in the 2d half of the volume. Lastly, I didn't dislike Wong but I didn't feel like I knew him as a grapheme.

The bending in this book was and so unlike from what we see in the show! It is way more than precise and delicate and I would honey to see it animated because it seems then cool and unique.

I have to admit I was on the watch for references to the original prove(s) in this and I'grand happy to report there are a few including 2 mentions of cabbages and what I remember are hints to the beingness of the White Lotus.

Overall this was super fun, hit me right in the feel and made me so happy and excited to read more of it.

Damn this book has really raised my standards for YA fantasy. Being a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I was already going in with a healthy corporeality of bias but this book managed to exceed the already loftier expectations I had for it.

Damn this book has really raised my standards for YA fantasy. Existence a huge fan of Avatar: The Terminal Airbender, I was already going in with a healthy amount of bias only this book managed to exceed the already high expectations I had for it.

My Highlights:

Kyoshi herself! - she'due south such a brilliant grapheme with a fantastic arc. An unusually tall girl with brute strength who strikes fear everywhere she goes just in reality is just a deeply alone girl looking for a family to call her own after her parents abandoned her as a kid. She suffers so much loss in this book just I love how she retains her cadre strength and sense of justice throughout all her trials. Watching Kyoshi slowly get the fearsome Avatar we all know her to be is a truly rewarding experience. Her grapheme development was but astonishing.
✨ I loved seeing how the writer played around with the called one and the mentor tropes.
✨ This is a much darker story compared to The Final Airbender and Legend of Korra - it's about grief, betrayal, and how far you're willing to get for revenge. I mean Kyoshi literally joins a gang of criminals for her revenge quest. I appreciated how much this volume felt like its own unique story while being set in a world familiar to fans of the Television series.
✨ Speaking of the world, I loved how the worldbuilding is expanded hither - non merely exercise we learn more about the lore and the Earth Kingdom just besides nearly the relationships between the Four Nations and the politics involved (yes I'grand a hoe for politics in my fantasies).
Also the magic system! - I didn't remember we'd get anything new in terms of the elemental bending but we did! I really liked how the book differentiated between the different types of bending that are possible - a more precise kind vs. the all-out powerful kind that Kyoshi prefers. The dust-stepping thing was and then cool!
The fight scenes were pretty cracking besides - the way the elemental magic is used with the surrounding terrain in the fight scenes was so well washed and fabricated me actually wish this was animated.
I really similar the themes of justice and ethics that are explored hither - nosotros become to come across the fraught nature of the World Kingdom with its decadent nobles and course disparities and how Kyoshi every bit the Avatar needs to navigate all that while grappling with her own need for personal revenge. The book also raises questions regarding the sacrifices that are required for the greater practiced - I loved seeing this kind of complex morality and but how much Kyoshi's sense of justice is tested.
The villain was but fantastic! - it's and then difficult to create this kind of compelling, fascinating villain without relying on a pitiful backstory to proceeds sympathy but the author did it! I loved how complex he was and how he genuinely wanted a meliorate future for the earth - he just had iffy ways of going about it.
✨ Okay simply with all that said.....the romance!!!! Kyoshi and Rangi are now my favorite YA fantasy couple. The tropes they served?? Friends-to-lovers, bodyguard trope, the serious/stoic and angry/overly emotional pairing. Their relationship felt so organic and I loved how protective they were of each other. I tin can but thank the author for approving u.s. with Kyoshi and her piddling spitfire of a girlfriend.

I accept simply a couple of gripes with the story:

📌 Some of the side characters, particularly Kirima and Wong, could have used a lot more development. Merely since near of the side characters are so incredibly well done, this is a very small complaint.
📌 The final confrontation with the villain was kinda underwhelming - not plenty to ruin the story for me but definitely a little anticlimactic.

Overall, I'm in honey with Kyoshi's origin story and I'm so excited to read the sequel! If y'all're a fan of The Final Airbender serial, y'all owe it to yourself to read this book.

P.Due south: I too think it'due south possible to read this story as a newbie to the Avatar world, specially since this is a prequel. You simply need to have a basic knowledge of the worldbuilding and the significance of the Avatar.

Well this book began in a very interesting way, and and so had a major lag near the heart, and then picked up over again. I think it's a solid entry in the ATLA spin-offs and I am definitely going to read the next installment. I wish it had kept up its quick pace the whole way through & I also wish the master antagonist had been just a pinch less mustache twirly, but definitely not a bad book.

Fans of the critically acclaimed television evidence Avatar: The Last Airbender will fall head over heels with The Ascension of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee. Weaving the story of a much loved character, Avatar Kyoshi, Yee has conjured a unique perspective on an already well established globe and takes what we know and beloved, from the source material, and adds new elements of interest.

I should preface this review by saying that I am a fan of the source fabric myself and went into this story with loftier expectations. While these expectations were met in some aspects of the story, overall I felt information technology may take hindered my experience and enjoyment. Yet, this story is a beautiful delineation of the origins of Avatar Kyoshi.

Kyoshi has always been a compelling grapheme for me. Her storyline in the show—being a more stern and deductive Avatar, and extremely powerful and unyielding—really captured my attention, then this was a treat to read. The 'humble origins' that are referenced in the blurb really are the most humble an Avatar could exist as a retainer to the incorrectly chosen Avatar. The dynamic of that really intrigued me every bit both a reader and a fan of the evidence because, as fans, we know her truthful destiny. Plus to see her in a position where her true identity was beingness overshadowed past an incorrectly chosen Avatar was quite interesting and it really commented on how people, mostly men, place boundaries on powerful women to put themselves in a position of ability. Information technology felt similar to the narrative of Captain Marvel as nosotros watch her abound and accept her destiny. We meet her become the Avatar we know, seeing her take on the position and responsibility of the Avatar, and seeing her trust and love others around her actually hooked me into rooting for her character.

The affair that has always interested me about the Avatar world is the touch, whether positive of negative, that each Avatar has on the side by side. For example, Avatar Yangchen created an era of peace and subsequently Kuruk brought most an era of anarchy. As Kyoshi grows into her destiny, she develops a contrasting temperament to Kuruk—much similar the element of Earth, she becomes stern and unyielding. Her grapheme development throughout the novel really does stand out as a highlight.

As mentioned earlier, the world is in anarchy since Avatar Kuruk has died at a immature age—younger than anyone could've expected. The rush to find the adjacent Avatar really adds to the atmosphere of the story and to the complexity of the antagonist, which I establish quite gripping considering the globe was without an Avatar for a longer menstruation of time than the norm. This opened up new opportunities for there to be a more innovative sense of globe building including the introduction of outlaws, the introduction of new groups that used an Avatarless world to plague on the weak, and the introduction of powerful people to accept advantage of their positions. But, while this gave more opportunity for this dynamic, it saturated the story. I recall the writer tried to create a three part narrative, to almost structure the story in a manner, but information technology felt overwhelming to the point that it did hinder the development, and sometimes even the relevance of aspects inside the novel.

It does take an incredible amount of creativity to dive deeper in the workings of a world, and Yee has done so by enveloping the story with nuances of political abuse and the seductive nature of power. While this conversation was axiomatic throughout the story, the execution could have been stronger and more than streamlined. I think that the intentions were there, and that there were several successful attempts at this, but information technology did become muddled equally the story developed. This would also come downwardly to the pacing of the story. I don't desire to compare this novel with Avatar: The Concluding Airbender, but the show naturally gave plenty of room for a natural progression of the themes and topics being discussed – friendship, war, power, etc. Also, the fact that this story takes a character from an already established and loved world, means that the story volition flock lovers of that world. I experience that mayhap outsiders may find it a tad difficult at first, just every bit everything progresses, information technology becomes much easier to grasp.

On another note, when an author gives the perspective of the antagonist to their readers, it should give a deeper insight into the motivations of the antagonist equally a way for the states readers to understand with them. While I enjoyed reading the antagonist's chapters for the dialogue and action information technology gave, they could've been omitted or merged with chapters that involved Kyoshi, even beingness added the final dialogue at the climax of the story.

Overall, I quite enjoyed this story. Getting to know the origins of such an iconic graphic symbol was quite a journey. Diving into the past of Avatar Kyoshi has definitely allowed my love of her to grow. Also, getting to understand her need to be the strong figure we know in the show was no doubt a treat. I believe, knowing at present the hush-hush of her character and the real origins of her story, has given me the opportunity to grow every bit a fan.

More of a 2.5 stars to be perfectly honest. I wanted to love this since I grew upwardly watching ATLA as a child, but I found myself not enjoying reading this. Near the middle to end of the novel, I found myself skimming quite a bit just to finish. I think I would have enjoyed if more if it was a graphic novel instead since I'm and then used to seeing this world in animated or graphic novel grade. The writing was dainty; wasn't awful or amazing. I wish the writing had memorable quotes or advice such as life, one thousand More than of a 2.v stars to be perfectly honest. I wanted to dear this since I grew upwardly watching ATLA equally a child, but I constitute myself not enjoying reading this. Near the heart to terminate of the novel, I found myself skimming quite a flake just to finish. I think I would have enjoyed if more than if it was a graphic novel instead since I'm so used to seeing this world in animated or graphic novel form. The writing was nice; wasn't awful or astonishing. I wish the writing had memorable quotes or advice such as life, skillful vs evil or rest quotes that Avatar was known for. Merely nothing actually stuck out for me. As for the characters, I found myself non caring for anyone at all. Of grade I disliked the villain considering he and the other bough masters kept comparison Kyoshi to Kuruk which pissed me off since she was her own person. But the obsession with Kuruk irritated me. Then the villain at to the lowest degree was proficient enough to brand me hate him, I guess? The plot, all the same, was withal non that great though. Like how did you not know that Yun was not the Avatar for two years? He literally showed no bending ability exterior of Earth for two years, or any spiritual connexion without someone questioning information technology? Plus that ending was really rushed. It was maybe 10 pages long or something with the final battle.

Personally, I loved seeing the glimpses of Kyoshi in ATLA, but I just didn't become the same feeling reading this book. I just didn't care to become to know her meliorate and had a hard fourth dimension wanting to treat her or anyone else in the book. For other hardcore fans, they may appreciate a book that explores more into the Avatar world, only I'yard only 1 of those people who believe series that are astonishing, should only be left alone after ending. Y'all tin see that by the backlash for the sequel for Harry Potter, too as the prequel movies. Most people believe they want their favorites books or movies to have more to them or to continue longer, only when it does happen, many fans find themselves sorely disappointed. I already know I'm ane of those people which is one of the reasons why I don't read sequels or prequels to popular books, graphic novels or shows. I experience that they just never hold up to the original. It's why this and Korra never really held up to the same standard as ATLA did for me, just because I practice love this show so much, I always want to see if it's worth it. Simply for now, I remember I'll just stick to rewatching ATLA and listening to the cute soundtrack for the show.
